“But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
2 Corinthians 8:7

The theme for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is “Responding to God’s Grace.” In responding to God’s call to grace and stewardship, which lies at the heart of our participation in the life of the Church – we do so by supporting our parishes, schools, catechetical programs, service programs for the poor, the unborn and the marginalized through our Diocesan Annual Appeal.

The Diocese of San Diego and Imperial Counties supports this holy work in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and in a unique way provides for our parishes many vital resources and programs which they cannot obtain on their own.

Thank You for Your Support!

If you have supported us this year, we sincerely thank you for your wonderful and generous gifts toward the Annual Catholic Appeal.  A gift to the Appeal is always a gift to the parish. Because of your joyful generosity, our parish community remains vibrantly united with the entire Church and is able to be more Alive in Christ!

To date, we have received gifts from 247 families who collectively pledged $84,135.00.  Thank you so much! Our hearts overflow with gratitude and thankfulness for the prompt and gracious response from so many of our faith-filled families.

May God bless you abundantly always!

Assistance for Catholic Education

The Annual Catholic Appeal currently provides some funding to 11 schools impacting the lives of over 1,600 students. These grants have been made to keep the vital mission of Catholic education both accessible and affordable for children of families in need.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities is based on the person of Jesus, who “came not be served, but to serve” and is our primary diocesan social services agency. We believe in dignity of the human person, and are committed to the Judeo-Christian vision of justice and peace. Through it, we assist almost 300,000 people each year by providing a network of important programs and services.

Priestly Formation

The Office for Priestly Formation administers the diocesan program for both pre-seminarian and seminarian candidates and is located at the St. Francis Center on the University of San Diego campus. As a house of formation, St. Francis Center helps prepare men in each of the four areas of formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral for admission to a
seminary school of theology.

Prison Ministry

Our diocese impacts the lives of those imprisoned in 27 different prisons, jails, and detention facilities, housing over 25,000 inmates. This includes eight sheriff’s jails, five juvenile detention facilities, three state prisons, and four federal detention facilities. Many of these inmates are hungry to deepen their relationship with God. We merely become the conduits or channels of the Holy Spirit.

Seminarian Support

The future of San Diego’s local Church is strengthened by the number of men who answer the call to a priestly vocation. We are currently supporting 22 seminarians with an average cost of $45,000 per year to educate a seminarian. This past year we ordained three priests and one transitional deacon.

Retired Priests

There are currently 55 retired priests of the Diocese of San Diego. The diocese provides financial support to retired priests so that they can live in dignity, free of anxiety about their means of support. This includes providing health and auto insurance, nursing care at Nazareth House San Diego if needed, supplementing their pension, and expenses for them to attend the annual convocation of priests.

Young Adult Ministry

The Young Adult ministry reaches out and ministers to young adults inviting them into responsible participation into the full life and mission of the Church. We strive to connect them to Christ, His Church and a faith-filled peer community by offering various social, service and spiritual opportunities.

A Letter From the Bishop

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

God pours forth grace to each of us every day of our lives, inviting us to share ever more deeply His life of mercy, justice, and compassion.

This year, the theme of our Annual Catholic Appeal is “Responding to God’s Grace”.

In responding to God’s call to grace and stewardship, which lies at the heart of our participation in the life of the Church – we do so by supporting our parishes, schools, catechetical programs, service programs for the poor, the unborn and the marginalized through our Diocesan Annual Appeal.

Through your generous support, the diocese is able to carry out its mission of priestly formation, forming permanent deacons, preparing couples for marriage, ministering to the poor, the marginalized and the imprisoned, training our youth and young adults, training parish leaders
to bring faith to children in our parish schools and religious formation programs, and caring for our retired priests who have given the whole of their lives in service to the life of the Church.

The Diocese of San Diego and Imperial Counties supports this holy work in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and in a unique way provides for our parishes many vital resources and programs which they cannot obtain on their own.

Our Diocesan Annual Appeal establishes a basic underpinning for enabling the diocese to carry out these vital ministries in the work of the Gospel in San Diego and Imperial Counties. For this reason, I invite you to participate with a joyous and open heart to this year’s appeal, with the knowledge that in doing so, you share of yourself immensely in the
work of Christ and the grace of Catholic discipleship.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Bishop
Robert W. McElroy
Bishop of San Diego
and Imperial Counties
